What is the matter with the organization at the 'flu vaccine clinics???
December 1 - We attended the 'flu vaccine clinic in Lunenburg at the Community Centre today. As we had seen and heard reports of long queues, we decided to get there early. We had to travel a distance (Cherry Hill), and we arrived shortly after 11:30 am for the 1 pm opening time. The centre was open, warm and filled with chairs and tables all ready for the clinic. We sat comfortably for about 30 minutes, until the security detachment arrived. They told us that no-one was allowed to wait in the hall. We asked whether we could be given numbers so as to remain at the head of the line. No, that was not possible apparently, until the clinic opened, and we were told we should wait in our vehicles in the car park. We did so for a further 15 minutes, but had to run the car engine to keep warm. Then people started to queue outside the doors, and so as not to lose our places, we joined the queue. There was a very brisk cold wind blowing, and snow flurries began in earnest. We all (many of us elderly) stood and shivered outside until just before 1 pm, when we were allowed indoors, given numbered tickets and directed towards the empty chairs.
The registration process began almost immediately, and that, along with the actual immunizations, took very little time and proceeded very efficiently.
The chairs for people waiting to register were by this time full, although there was a lot of empty space that could have been used for many more chairs. As we left, we saw many people still waiting outside in the cold wind, as there were no empty chairs left in the hall...
I'd just like to alert those in charge of organizing these clinics so they understand that people made to wait outside in the cold and snow might actually suffer health problems as a result, while waiting for their 'flu shot. What would it have taken for them to allow us to enter early, to put more chairs in place for newcomers and thus help everyone stay warm and well on a cold day? Where was the logic?
We're pleased we got our shots so efficiently, but the wait in the cold was totally unnecessary.
elke love
