If there is anyone who would like to ask any questions about life in NS as an immigrant, what its like living in NS on the South Shore. Infact anything from the price of groceries to the school system please feel free to leave a message.....I'll do my best from the perspective of a family of 5 who moved here to study in 2004 and continue to live here on work and study permits...soon to go through the Nova Scotia Nominee Program to achieve permanent residency.

There are challenges but we have absolutely no regrets. This is now our home!

Hi Carolyn,

What a great resource this is.

My wife and I are artists in the states and are in the process of selling our gallery/frameshop we have run the last 25 years. In our travels we have decided that Nova Scotia is our place of choice for the next chapter in our lives. We are currently looking for property on the South Shore. Initially we expect to be only seasonal but may apply for citizenship at some point although that is not certain as yet.

Our research and visits have reavealed many things. Real Estate prices and property taxes are much less expensive in Nova Scotia than in New York. Groceries seem to be pretty much the same when averaged out - some things higher here - some things higher there. Gasoline/Petrol is higher in Canada. Many things are pretty even.

I am wondering about utilities? Can you be of any help on this. Based on what I can tell it looks like rates are similar but we pay very high taxes, fees and delivery charges that really add up. It seems that electric bills may be less in Nova Scotia?

I will be a regular fixture on here I expect as we move toward our. I will no doubt have a lot of questions and look forward to getting to know the other folks on here.

Best Regards,
Cabinman

Dear Cabinman...hello!

To give you an idea of I suspect are fairly average household power/utility prices for a family with always someone at home and who doesn't use renewable energy (YET!)

Oil (used for heating and water heating) and used frugally for heating will cost me $1500- $2000 per year (my home is fairly small)
Power- about $1500 per year (I'll need to double check that)
Telephone- (I have an overseas tariff + dial up internet) is about the same as the power
Property taxes- here is where I benefit as I live rurally and my taxes are only about $850 per year
Water- FREE- I have a drilled well although of course the water pump uses power

High speed will be available to the whole of Nova Scotia shortly

Moving into towns the taxes and water will be higher...

Hope this helps a little!

Hi there Cabinman and any other newcomers!

My husband and I relocated from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada some 3 years ago. We both worked in Mississauga, Ontario.

If you are looking for a new home in a very quiet peaceful setting with lake access to a private lake. Check out www.uniqueretreatproperties.ca....depending on the area you are looking for...our property and homes may be of interest to you...they are located 15 minutes outside of Bridgewater and within half an hour from Lunenburg/Mahone Bay. All our homes are unique and no two homes are the same. We value the environment and our properties are all of rural size(2.5 acres and up) keeping our homes private. It is a very quiet setting. If we can be of any assistance to you...please let us know. We have seasonal residents from Bermuda and full time residents from Halifax presently. We also provide property/home maintenance services to our residents should they need them.
